Botox® and Dermal Fillers are injectable products that combat the signs of aging non-surgically. Botox® functions in a different way from dermal fillers, however.
Botox® targets lines and wrinkles that are caused by muscle activity. These include the frown lines that form between the eyebrows (sometimes called “11” lines), forehead creases, crow’s feet, and some lines around the mouth. Botox® is made of Botulinum toxin, but don’t let the name fool you. It is a purified protein that has been used medically for years, even in children, to treat muscle spasms. It is also used to treat hyperhidrosis (severe sweating) and migraine headaches.
Dermal fillers work on lines and wrinkles that are caused by lost volume in the face and neck. They can even help to subtly lift sagging tissues in some cases. At Roseville Facial Plastic Surgery, we offer several types of dermal fillers, each of which provide a different kind of correction. Some fillers can also provide lip augmentation, either increasing the fullness of the lips or restoring the lips to their prior more youthful fullness.
The best results can sometimes be obtained by a combination of Botox® and dermal fillers. Often, we can achieve remarkable results that can postpone the need for a facelift.Dr. David J. Kiener, M.D.

Types of Dermal Fillers
A filler made of hyaluronic acid, a substance already found in the body, Belotero Balance can correct fine lines on the face. The results last 4-9 months.
A smooth gel made of hyaluronic acid, Juvéderm® Ultra Plus is effective on moderate to severe lines such as nasolabial folds and is also an excellent choice for lip enhancement, making the lips fuller. The results last 6-9 months in most patients.
A hyaluronic acid gel, Juvéderm® Voluma is injected deeply over and below the cheekbones to make them appear fuller and provide a subtle lift to sagging tissues in that area. It also lasts longer than most dermal fillers – as much as 2 years.
This dermal filler is injected into a deep layer of the skin to correct nasolabial folds, marionette lines, slightly sagging jowls, and hollowed temples. It is composed of microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite suspended in a gel carrier. Radiesse® also promotes the production of more collagen. Results of Radiesse® can last as long as a year in some patients.
This dermal filler corrects deep creases, hollowed temples, and sagging jowls. Read more about Sculptra®.
What are Botox® and Dermal Filler Injections Like?
A numbing cream can be applied to the injection sites. This topical formula takes a short time to take effect. Some dermal fillers contain Lidocaine in their formulas to further make the treatment more comfortable.
The injections themselves are done using a very small needle, and the treatment only takes a short time. We may apply an ice pack after the injections to help prevent swelling.
What is Recovery Like After Botox® and Dermal Fillers?
No downtime is required after Botox® or dermal filler injections. You might experience some swelling, bruising, and tenderness for a few days to a week, but these conditions can be hidden with makeup.
Botox® results last approximately 4-5 months, and you begin to see the effects during the first week after the injections. Please refer to the information above about each individual dermal filler for how long they last.
