Facelift / Cheek / Neck Lift

We can’t turn back time, but a facelift may be the closest we can get. A surgical procedure to remove wrinkles and tighten sagging skin, a facelift can help you look years younger.

In the past, surgeons only tightened the skin, and this sometimes caused facelifts to look obvious and not last as long as they could. Today, surgeons know to also tighten the underlying muscles and tissue so that these tissues don’t pull on the skin. As a result, facelifts now typically last ten years or longer and, in the hands of a skilled surgeon like Dr. Kiener, patients look natural and not “operated on.”

We will spend time with you in consultation, answering all of your questions so that you can decide if a facelift is a smart choice for you.

Note that a facelift does not correct signs of aging above the mid-face. If you have drooping eyebrows, forehead wrinkles, undereye bags, or sagging upper eyelids, you might want to have a brow lift or eyelid lift along with your facelift. Performing other surgical or non-surgical procedures along with your facelift ensures a holistic approach to facial aesthetics.

What can be accomplished by a Facelift?

A facelift will tighten the lower two-thirds of the face, as well as the neck, lifting sagging tissue in the jowls and jawline. It smooths deep wrinkles on the face and neck and improves the appearance of sunken cheeks.

How does Roseville Facial Plastic Surgery Approach Facelift Surgery?

We perform facelifts as an outpatient procedure, either with the patient under general anesthesia or a local anesthetic with sedation. During the surgery, the incisions are designed to minimize their visibility.

If you only have signs of aging in the cheek area, a cheek lift can be performed, which is a slightly abbreviated type of facelift. If you have sagging and bands in the neck area only, a neck lift can be done. A facelift is basically a combination of a cheek lift and neck lift. Dr. Kiener will discuss all of these options with you during your consultation and will recommend the technique that will help you look your best.

There are a number of techniques that can be used to perform a facelift. No two patients are the same, and we evaluate each person to determine the best technique for the result they want.

After the incisions have been made, the skin is elevated off the deep tissues. Then, the deep tissues are tightened. The skin is then redraped, and excess skin removed so that your face and neck are tighter and younger-looking. The incisions are then carefully closed with small sutures.

What is Recovery Like After a Facelift?

You will need about 2 weeks off from work for recovery. There is, of course, some swelling, bruising, and tenderness after the surgery. The majority of the sutures are removed 7 days after surgery, and the remaining sutures are removed at 10 days post-operative.

Most swelling and bruising will resolve by about 2 1/2 weeks after surgery. You can keep swelling down to some degree by sleeping with your head elevated during your recovery period. We will prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection, as well as pain medication to ease discomfort.

Vigorous exercise and sports should be avoided for about 4 weeks. Most women can wear makeup within about 2 weeks after surgery.

You will look your best about three months after the operation, so if you have a major event planned such as a child’s wedding, we recommend having the procedure at least three months in advance.

You will follow up with us several times after your surgery to ensure that you are healing well and that you are happy with your results.
