Botox®® and dermal fillers are injectable products that restore a younger look to the face without surgery. These two types of rejuvenating treatment work in different ways.
Botox® targets lines and wrinkles that are caused by muscle activity. These include the frown lines that form between the eyebrows (sometimes called “11” lines), forehead creases, crow’s feet, and some lines around the mouth. Botox® is made of Botulinum toxin, but don’t let the name fool you. It is a purified protein that has been used medically for years, even in children, to treat muscle spasms. It is also used to treat hyperhidrosis (severe sweating) and migraine headaches.

How Botox®® Works to Make You Look Younger
Botox® targets expression lines and wrinkles caused by repeated movement of the facial muscles. These include the frown lines that form between the eyebrows (sometimes called “11” lines), forehead creases, crow’s feet, and some lines around the mouth. Botox® is a form of botulinum toxin, but don’t let the name fool you. It is a purified protein that doctors have used for years, even in children, to treat muscle spasms. Botox® works by blocking the signals from nerves that cause the muscles to contract. Treated muscles relax, allowing the skin above them to smooth and flatten, softening fine lines and wrinkles. Botox® can also successfully treat hyperhidrosis (severe sweating) and migraine headaches.
How Dermal Fillers Improve Your Facial Appearance
Most dermal fillers consist of hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in your skin and connective tissue. It helps retain moisture and keeps your skin flexible and resilient.
Dermal fillers minimize lines and wrinkles in the face and neck, softening creases and making them less visible. Dermal fillers can also add volume in the cheeks and temples and under the eyes, correcting the hollowed look that can come with aging. Some fillers can add volume to the lips, restoring youthful fullness or giving them a plumper look for the first time. Other fillers can help subtly lift sagging tissues. At Roseville Facial Plastic Surgery, we offer several types of dermal fillers, each of which is ideal for different kinds of cosmetic improvements and to correct specific facial issues.
After examining you during your consultation, Dr. Kiener will recommend the filler(s) that will provide you with the optimal outcome.
The best results can sometimes be obtained by a combination of Botox® and dermal fillers. Often, we can achieve remarkable results that can postpone the need for a facelift.

Types of Dermal Fillers
Belotero Balance
A filler made of hyaluronic acid, a substance already found in the body, Belotero Balance can correct fine lines on the face. The results last 4-9 months.
Juvéderm® Ultra Plus
A smooth gel made of hyaluronic acid, Juvéderm® Ultra Plus is effective on moderate to severe lines such as nasolabial folds and is also an excellent choice for lip enhancement, making the lips fuller. The results last 6-9 months in most patients.
Juvéderm® Voluma
A hyaluronic acid gel, Juvéderm® Voluma is injected deeply over and below the cheekbones to make them appear fuller and provide a subtle lift to sagging tissues in that area. It also lasts longer than most dermal fillers – as much as 2 years.
Radiesse®
This dermal filler is injected into a deep layer of the skin to correct nasolabial folds, marionette lines, slightly sagging jowls, and hollowed temples. It is composed of microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite suspended in a gel carrier. Radiesse® also promotes the production of more collagen. Results of Radiesse® can last as long as a year in some patients.

A hyaluronic acid facial filler, Restylane® corrects nasolabial folds, marionette lines, smile lines, and fine lines above the upper lip. It can also be used for lip augmentation and filling hollows below the eyes. The results last about 6 months, often longer when used below the eyes.

Commonly Asked Questions About Botox® and Dermal Fillers
What Are Botox® and Dermal Filler Injections Like?
We may apply a numbing cream may be applied to the injection sites. This topical formula takes a short time to take effect. Some dermal fillers contain an anesthetic called lidocaine in their formulas to make the treatment more comfortable.
The injections themselves require the use of a very small needle, and the treatment only takes a short time. We may apply an ice pack after the injections to help prevent swelling.
What Is Recovery Like After Treatment With Botox® and Dermal Fillers?
No downtime is necessary after Botox®® or dermal filler injections. You might experience some swelling, bruising, and tenderness for a few days to a week, but these conditions can be hidden with makeup. Optimal results from injection treatments appear in about a week.
How Long Do the Results Last?
Botox®® results last approximately four to five months. Filler results last from four months to two years, as described above in the information for each type of dermal filler. When the results of Botox® or dermal filler injections begin to wear off, you can schedule a refresher treatment.
Can I Combine Botox® and Dermal Filler Treatments?
Yes. The two treatments address different aging problems, and it’s common to have them done at the same time. Botox® works to soften expression wrinkles, while dermal fillers are best for more stationary creases and on parts of the face where it’s not desirable to subdue muscle movement. You can opt to combine both treatments with other nonsurgical procedures, such as chemical peels and microneedling, for a full-face rejuvenation.
What Areas of the Face Can Botox® Treat?
Botox® is effective in treating crow’s feet (fine lines next to the eyes), frown lines (creases between and above the eyebrows), and forehead lines (horizontal creases in the forehead).
What Areas of the Face Can Dermal Fillers Treat?
Dermal fillers can soften or eliminate fine lines above the upper lip, smile lines, marionette lines (the creases that extend down from the corners of the mouth), and nasolabial folds (the creases that run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth). Fillers can also add volume the lips and to areas of the face that have hollowed with age, including the cheeks, temples, and under the eyes. Some fillers can lift sagging tissue on the cheeks and jowls.
Do Botox® Injections Prevent Wrinkles?
Botox® can prevent dynamic wrinkles that result from muscle movement or help delay their development.
How Long Do Cosmetic Injection Benefits Last?
Most dermal filler benefits last between nine to 12 months. These results depend on variables such as the product, the patient’s reaction to filler, and skin pliability. For instance, Botox® lasts from four to six months, with some fillers in the Juvéderm® family lasting for up to 18 months.
What Other Injectable Anti-Aging Treatments Do You Offer?
At Roseville Facial Plastic Surgery, we pride ourselves on staying abreast of new technologies and products that effectively help our patients look their best. Such treatments include Kybella®®, which removes the look of fat that accumulates underneath the jawline, and Sculptra®®, which provides a more gradual improvement than our other fillers’ immediacy. We also offer other non-injectable non-surgical treatments such as threading, microneedling, and Ultherapy.
We are proud to announce we have acheived TOP 250 Level as an Allergan Partner.
