In the past, the only way to improve a double chin was through surgery – either with a neck lift or liposuction. After FDA approval in 2015 of Kybella®, we now have a non-surgical way to correct a double chin or “submental fullness.” This excess fat under the chin is virtually impossible to fix without a cosmetic procedure, no matter how much weight you lose.
Few practices offer Kybella® yet, but our physicians are certified by the manufacturer to train other physicians in the proper use of this injectable treatment. Kybella® is new, but the FDA approved it after more than 20 studies proved that it is both effective and safe.
Kybella® works by destroying excess fat cells through injecting a substance (deoxycholic acid) already in the body that naturally absorbs these cells.

Since we are certified by the manufacturer of Kybella®, we have a deep understanding of how this product works in the body. No two patients are the same, and we evaluate each person to determine the best technique for the result they want. We understand where to place the injections for the best and safest results.Dr. David J. Kiener, M.D.
We will spend time with you in consultation, examining you and asking questions about your medical history. Kybella® is not right for everyone. Certain medications are not appropriate to be mixed with Kybella®, and certain kinds of tissue under the chin cannot be easily corrected with Kybella®.
For example, if you have loose skin and/or muscles under the chin, a surgical neck lift or non-surgical treatment such as Ultherapy may be more effective for you. We will provide our recommendation during your consultation and answer any questions you have.

How does Roseville Facial Plastic Surgery Approach Kybella® Injections?
Using our understanding of how Kybella® works in the body, our knowledge of the anatomy of the face, and our experience in the field of plastic surgery, we are able to evaluate each patient individually to determine the best way to use this innovative product.
Kybella® is an outpatient procedure that uses a fine needle. We numb the area with a topical anesthetic and then inject a small amount of local anesthetic before marking the area with a pen and proceeding with the treatment. Ice is applied to the area after the treatment to minimize swelling. The results are visible in about 6 weeks, at which time another treatment may be necessary. Most patients see very good results with 2-3 treatments.
What is Recovery Like After Kybella®?
Kybella® requires no downtime. Most patients can leave our office and return to work or other activities right away. Patients may experience some minor swelling and bruising, however, for about 7 days. For that reason, we would recommend to not plan important events during that period of time. Expect some tenderness for about 2 weeks. Nonprescription pain medication such as Motrin can be used, if necessary.
While aging continues and new fat can form under the chin, the fat that has been destroyed by Kybella® will not return.
